Exchange News and Announcements - Microsoft Ignite 2020

Today we are announcing that the next versions of Exchange Server, SharePoint Server, Skype for Business Server and Project Server will be available in the second half of 2021, and are only available with the purchase of a subscription license. Subscription entitles access to support, product updates, security and time zone patches.

Microsoft Office will also see a new perpetual release for both Windows and Mac, in the second half of 2021.

We will share additional details around the official names, pricing and availability of all these products later.

.. So there are more Exchange and Sharepoint on premise... the question is what exactly they mean with subscription license. And how you can counteract.

Hi,
it is not yet known whether the subscription license is a volume license (VLSC) or a Microsoft 365 subscription or a completely new type of subscription. Personally, I could imagine the latter to boost the cloud.

With Exchange, it didn't surprise me that they don't (yet) want to force the cloud on all customers. However, I didn't expect Skype for Business Server to have an on-premise version.

Yes, probably even most of those who feel overwhelmed by the administration of it hope so.

Unfortunately, it may well be that they should just look for another line of work... that would do more justice to the forum and its name again...

Hi,

who do you think you have to thank for further on-premises versions of Exchange Server, Skype and co? Certainly not the medium-sized business customers...

Dani

The next version of Exchange Server will support in-place upgrades from Exchange Server 2019 for a period of approximately two years following release.
I'm not familiar with in-place upgrades for Exchange.
