Upgrade from srv2012R2 to srv 2016 or19

Hello All

I have a VM running Windows Server 2012R2, I wanted to upgrade it to version 2016 or 19.
I have now downloaded an iso file from the Microsoft site. The problem is now when I want to do the upgrade I can not take my apss and files with me. It always comes a strange error message.

I have seen in the registry that I have the Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter version and have so also selected the 2019 Datacenter version goes but also so not.

did anyone have this error message and can help me further

I will appreciate any help thank you

Hi,

There are different editions and language Versions of the servers.

For an inplace Upgrade you need to upgrade to the same edition and language. Otherwise you can't keep your programs and data.

And you need to run setup from the running old server for inplace upgrade. İf you boot from the iso, only a fresh install ist possible.

hello
thank you for your quick reply

on the version and language I have already looked downloaded the correct iso.

what do you mean by "And you need to run setup from the running old server for inplace upgrade."

I have started the setup on the VM.

That's what I meant.

Which roles/services does your server have?

BTW: did you download the eval version of server 2016/2019? That version can't be used for upgrading retail/oem/enterprise versions!

Question is why the TO uses an English thread on the German website while Administrator has a dedicated English version on https://administrator.de or https://administrator.de or with just a simple click in the bottom, right corner on the English version?!
Totally weired, even because the TO posted German threads in the past.

Does not really matter I have both iso downloaded and tested, so once the 2016 and once the 2019.

But can it be that it does not work with the evaluation version. Since it is only a version of 180 days?

The VM is on VMware 4 cores processor and 30GB RAM and about 150GB SSD.
