In the days of NT4, when a Group Policy setting was removed for a group of computers the settings would leave the registry entries on the machines until the setting was set to the opposite in Group Policy or the registry on the workstations was cleared out of old entries. This, of course, was a problem for network administators with many computers, users and Group Policy Objects - to change a setting it wasn't as simple as just removing a GPO configuration. In Windows 2000 and later, this behaviour has been partially changed. All the Microsoft group policies, whether they are in-built or you add ADM files later on, work in a "Policies" key in the registry. Any settings defined in this key are effectively reset every time you apply the Group Policy - in other words, should the settings present in there be removed in the GPO (but not necessarily set to the opposite value), the setting will be removed and will no longer apply. For areas in the registry which are not within the 4 Policies keys defined in the above links, the settings will remain when the Group Policy is removed. For non-Microsoft technologies, the ADM files may refer to entries outside the Policies keys, which isn't the best setup. For all the Microsoft entries, almost all of them are fully controlled and will not be tattooed when used correctly.
