Knoppix bootet, Suse nicht - warum?
ich habe einen alten PC mit DVD-Laufwerk. Wenn ich Knoppix bootet will funktioniert alles super. Aber mit einer Suse DVD wird das nix. Der Rechner denkt nicht mal annähernd daran von DVD zu booten. Die DVD ist vollkommen ok. Habt Ihr eine Idee warum sich der PC weigert?

Vielleicht liegt es am 'alten PC'. Ist Knoppix auf CD oder auch auf DVD?
Läuft das LW an bei der SuSE DVD?
Kann die SuSE auf einem andern PC booten?

W wird mucken, aber die hast 3 Tage Zeit zum Aktivieren, vorher Aktivvierungsdatenbank (WPA.DBL) sichern.

keine Sorge, Linux ist in Sachen Hardware recht flexibel. Ich habe mal eine Platte aus einem alten Pentiumrechner in einen P4 eingebaut, ging problemlos

schau dir mal die Datei /etc/X11/XF86Config an.
Falls diese Datei nicht gibt öffne die gleichwertige Datei :
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
Nun schaust du dir den Screen Abschnitt an. Was steht dort ?
Außerdem würde ich solange du das Problem noch besitzt erstmal im Runlevel 3 arbeiten.
Konsole reicht doch.
PS. dort kannst auch Auflösung manuell ändern.

hast du schon Samba laufen. Wenn nicht probier scp oder direkt ssh wenn du sshd laufen hast. Musst du aber noch in der Firewall zulassen das du daruf zugreifen darfst.
Oder speicher es auf Disktte. Wenn deine anderen Rechner Windows PCs sind musst du diese aber mit Fat formatieren.

Stelle erstmal ein das du in der konsole startes dazu öffnes du mit einem Editor die Datei /etc/inittab und Stellst bei id:5:initdefault den Wert auf 3. Nun solltest du in der konsole erstmal ohne Grafikfehler arbeiten können, nach dem du neu gestartes hast. Danach kopierst die Datei /etc/X11/xorg.conf auf ein beliebiges Medium und kannst die nun posten.
Hast de eigentlich schon probiert den Grafiktreiber für deine Karte zu installieren ?

Kann doch aber nicht sein, dass ich die gesamten Paket für den X Server rausschmeis und neu installiere. Wir sind ja nicht bei Windows!!!

was ist das für eine Grafikkarte ? Gefroce, ATI/Radion oder Matrox ?
Probier vom Hersteller den Treiber zu installieren. Kenn diese Grafikkarte gar nicht.

die Grafika ist absolut Standard, und das logFile sieht auch gut aus. Kann es sein, daß der Monitor die eingestellte Frequenz nicht mitmacht? Prüfe das doch bitte nochmal.
Sorry, wenn das nix hilft, muss ich erstmal drüber nachdenken.

Hmm, bin nun endgültig von Runlevel 5 auf 3 umgestiegen. Brauche die Oberfläche nicht zwingend. Wäre aber schöner gewesen. gerade für das konfigurieren und senden von mails.

mal abgesehen von deinem Grafikproblem, das wahrscheinlich eine Mischung aus alter Grafikkarte und tollen Monitor ist - kenne ich dieses Boot-Problem auch.
Nach mehreren Versuchen habe ich das Gefühl, das SUSE(ab 9.2) sich nur bei PC's mit CPU > 1GHz installieren läßt.
Achso, deine S3-Grafikkarte. Folgender Vorschlag von "640x480" mit 60Hz.
Im Augenblick, wenn ich es richtig gesehen habe, ist "1280x1024" eingestellt.

habe suse mittlerweile 10 auf nem alten 850 p3 mit 8 mb ati und 1600x1200dpi und funktioniert immer prima. linux macht alles !!!
für mexx
starte mal einfach mit knoppix und schau dir die konfig an. die stellst du dann bei suse ein, dann klappts bestimmt, wenn die komponenten erkannt werden.

inzwischen habe ich SUSE auch auf einem alten 800 p3 zu laufen. Davor habe ich mal mit einem 400 p2 probiert. Mit dem Ergebnis, das sich SUSE beim Hardwarecheck aufgehängt hat.
Insofern revidiere ich an dieser Stelle meine Aussage.
Und behaupte SUSE(ab 9.2) arbeitet erst mit PC's ab 500MHz zusammen. Aber glücklich, glücklich wird man damit nicht.
